Boy Scouts
Artist statement: Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America is the largest youth organization in the United States, with 3 million youth members and 1 million adult leaders in the traditional programs of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing. Since 1910, over 111 million youth have participate in Scouting. In the past 4 years alone, Scouting youth and their leaders have volunteered more then 6.5 million hours of service to their communities through more then 75,000 service projects, benefiting food banks, local schools and civic organizations. The Boy Scouts of America have been speaking with one voice on the personal values embodied in the Scout Oath and Scout Law since their inception almost 100 years ago. As parents we were involved in Scouting from the time our son joined the Cub Scouts to well past his leaving the program as an Eagle Scout to head off to college. We have watched him and his fellow Scouts strive and sometimes struggle to achieve the various ranks leading to the coveted Eagle Scout award. We have observed them helping each other make it to the summit of 12,000 ft. peaks on the Boy Scout Rand in New Mexico through encouragement and by taking on some of the weight of a struggling Scout's pack. We have witnessed young boys develop into fine young self-reliant men of courage and character. We have seen how they have applied the training and leadership skills gained through Scouting as they grew into responsible young adults. Clearly, Boy Scouts are a significant part of American culture, shaping the values, citizenship, and skills of millions of young men. Pictured on this quilt block is our son's former Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout, Congressman Pete Sessions with his son, Alex. We are proud to honor Congressman Sessions and The Boy Scouts of America and offer this small token of our appreciation for the positive impact they both have had in the life of our son, David Saver, and the Boy Scouts in Troop 88, Bridgewater, New Jersey. |
