Artist statement: This quilt honors my friend Diandra, who volunteered in Ghana last summer to teach AIDS awareness through an outreach organization called Sankofa. Sankofa is a non-profit organization combining dance and music as a tool for HIV/AIDS education and community outreach. They also offer free AIDS testing and medical support. This quilt is based on a photograph of Diandra, a professional Irish Step dancer, entertaining some locals by step dancing on a latrine door to traditional Ghanaian beats. They wanted to get the attention of the town's people for their program, and they sure did! Most Ghanaians had never seen Irish Step dancing and they were absolutely thrilled by her skills.
