GO (RED) for AFRICA
Michelle Sposito

Artist statement: As long as I can remember I have always been very interested in Africa. It amazes me that here in America we have the education and medications for those dealing with HIV/AIDS but Africa does not have those luxuries. There are several organizations working to help solve that worldly problem. My favorite organization is the (RED) campaign. I love their cutting edge ideas and techniques of educating the public by selling products that are available in several locations.

Hallmark is one of the stores selling the great (RED) products. One of the items they are selling is a handbag that is made by artisans in the Republic of Mali, West Africa. The "bogoan" or mudcloth bag is made with traditional bambara patterns and natural earth dyes. The African Map on my quilt is made from one of these bags.
