Reaching Into Poverty
Artist statement: This theme immediately brought to my mind Kit Danley, a tiny woman who is also known as "Mother Theresa of the Hood." Over 25 years ago, she was called into the midst of poverty here in Phoenix. She chose to not only work with the poorest of the poor, but to live among them. Starting with a food and clothing bank to a large facility that now ministers to hundreds of kids and families each week through various programs. These include tutoring, unwed moms, at risk teens, job training and the list goes on and on. This single pair of hands has touched thousands in their poverty, imprisonment, despair, abuse and hopelessness. She has advocated for children in schools, homes and courts. She has even taken in families of children in homelessness. It all started with one pair of hands, one voice - but now she has hundreds standing alongside her shining the Love of God into the poverty stricken of our city. She is an amazing woman whom I greatly admire. Read more about her ministry here. |
