My first thought was of our actual house, but then I realized that home is any place I share with my family. As long as my family is gathered near, then wherever we are is my home.

My quilt "Our Home" shows my family peeking through the windows and door, smiling a welcome to all who wander by.

I dedicate this quilt to the memory of my sweet calico kitty, Tabitha who kept me company from 6th grade through my college years. Here's hoping we get a new puppy dog one day soon...

When thinking about this theme, I considered all the many creatures, insects, birds, and plants that find a home in my garden. Every day when I go out there, I find someone new is there. Slug, snail, and beetles are not as welcome as snake, spider and bird. The plants that grace the garden are lovely, including the weeds. The concept design for this quilt was teamwork with my 13-year-old son.

I live in an 187-year-old house. The middle section was a log cabin at one time. I dedicate this quilt to all the pioneer women who went forward with their families to the untamed Frontiers. The red in the center is meant to celebrate the heart and hearth inside the home. A log cabin is certainly a symbol today of a very simple yet very tough life back then. We should never forget all those that came before us and endured so much so that we can have the life we do today.

My piece shows houses from various parts of the world hanging on a line held between trees. My quilt depicts people from around the world enjoying the same things when they hang out at home: fun, friendship and sharing time with family, friends and neighbors. My belief is that the world is one big neighborhood with everyone wanting the same things in life, regardless of what part of the world they live in, what their homes look like, what color their skin. Home should be a Great Place to Hang Out and a starting point for happy beginnings and a place to return with fond memories.

With several musicians in the family, my house is a cacophony of sound. At any given time you can hear a trumpet, an electric guitar, a piano, an electronic keyboard set to a classic rock and roll mode, a drumset, or any one of a number of cd players, stereos or boom boxes scattered throughout the house. It's a loud and crazy place--and it's home.

My quilt represents home to me by the strength I find in my family unit, portrayed by the intertwined trees. Father and Mother help hold up the family to the sun, finding nourishment in the rain. The Passion flower relates to our passion for the family and the individuals who possess the gifts of growth, stability and dreams. We hold on to one another for strength, comfort and love but the stem of our sheltering leaf does not hold us too tightly so that we may become the unique individuals we are meant to be.

Boris and Natasha were littermates we adopted when they were seven weeks old. They were inseparable (and usually in trouble) as kittens. As they grew older, they were always aware of each other's locations and would often pose as "bookends," in same or mirror image positions. Sadly, Natasha developed cancer and left us in 2006. Boris is now almost ten-years-old and enjoys the outdoors, especially catnip and catching lizards.

A friend of mine told me I had to go look at this beautiful field of mustard in full bloom. She said "a shack is in the middle of the field." But to me that shack represented someone's home. The field was just as beautiful as she said it would be and the home was beautiful to me also.

One of my favorite childhood memories of living in Queens, NY is the infamous clothes line. As you walk through the neighborhood, you can look into the backyards and sneak a peak into the private lives of the individuals who live in the apartments by the type of clothes hung on their line. I remember hanging out the clothes in the middle of winter to dry and pulling the dried stiff clothes in from the kitchen window. The fragrance of freshly sun-dried clothes is implanted in my memory bank. It is a memory I want to keep.

Friends recently moved to Winnipeg to establish a new home. This piece reflects both the fun and frustrating aspects of making a house a home: building a fence for their dogs, knitting a curtain for privacy in the bathroom, hanging the bright blue mezuzah on the door. The door of their home is wide, representing the warmth and hospitality they offer, no matter where it is located.

Prior to coming to live with us, Libby had been in two shelters and a foster home. She is a german shepherd and chow mix...a lot of bark and no bite! Libby has fit right in to our happy family.

My home is my body. It was my home when I first drew breath and it will be my home as my last breath leaves me. Having been a yoga practioner, a yoga teacher and a scuba diver for many years, I've learned to be most comfortable in my own body, finding solace and protection in the quiet within and in my constant companion, the flow of my breath. I surrounded the picture with five different yoga asana stitched in variegated skin tone thread to show the growth and change my body/home goes through with every passing season.

Being a recent graduate from Flagler College in St. Augustine, I often daydreamed about what "home" was like when I attended school. The imagery I chose was a day I experienced on top of the fort ,where I could escape. It was a unique part of "home" that could not be found anywhere else. The gentle breezes coming off the Atlantic are so relaxing and a desire to be back there creeps up on me often.

Belle was the queen of the house. She was the best, most well behaved dog. Three years ago she got cancer and was gone within days. Three months later my step-father was diagnosed with the same type and he also died right away. It was only appropriate that we buried Belle's ashes with him. We can't see another golden without thinking of her. Due to my limited abilities, my granddaughter and mother helped me make this quilt of her.

Homer is our first dog. I never let my children get a dog because I didn't want more work to do. Like a good grandma, I gave in to my granddaughter when she was staying with me. We got him from the Humane Society. He has been a wonderful pet and is part of the family. He doesn't live in a doghouse but if he did, I think it would look something like this.
